Warning signs
A metallic grinding noise usually means the pads are worn down. If the steering wheel judders when you brake, the discs are often unevenly worn. If the car pulls to one side when braking, a calliper may be sticking. If the pedal feels soft or goes down further than usual, do not wait.
If the brake warning light is on with the parking brake released, brake fluid may be low. Have it checked before you drive on.
What we check on the brakes
- Pad thickness front and rear
- Discs: thickness, scoring, rust lip
- Callipers and guides
- Hoses and lines
- Brake fluid and parking brake
- Test drive: does the car pull to one side?
Pads, discs, fluid
Pads and discs are always replaced on both wheels of an axle, so that the car brakes straight.
Over time brake fluid absorbs water, which lowers its boiling point. On a long downhill run or with a trailer, vapour bubbles can form, and then the pedal goes to the floor. It is changed according to the manufacturer’s specification, usually every two years.
Heavy pickups and long standstills
A RAM 1500 weighs over two tonnes empty, considerably more with a load and a trailer. The brakes have to get rid of a correspondingly large amount of heat at every stop. We order genuine parts by the VIN (vehicle identification number) so that they match the version.
Cars that stand for a long time, such as a Dodge Challenger on a seasonal registration, build up rust on the discs, and callipers can seize. After a long standstill, a check is worthwhile.

What customers often ask
How long do brake pads last?
There is no fixed mileage. A lot of town driving, a heavy car or frequent towing shorten their life. If your car is with us anyway, ask about the condition of the pads.
Do the discs have to be replaced every time the pads are changed?
No, only when the minimum thickness has been reached or the disc has deep scoring, heavy rust or run-out. The minimum thickness is usually stamped on the disc. New discs, however, always get new pads too.
Why do my brakes squeal after rain?
Usually there is surface rust on the discs, which disappears after a few stops. If the noise stays or turns into grinding, have the brakes looked at.
