Air conditioning service

Even without a fault, an air-conditioning system loses some refrigerant over the years and then cools less well. In Oppin near Halle (Saale) we check the system, recharge it and, on request, treat the ventilation against musty smells.

How you notice it

The air no longer gets properly cold, there is a musty smell when you switch it on, and misted-up windows clear only slowly.

What the air-conditioning service includes

  • Measuring the temperature at the vents
  • Inspecting the compressor, condenser and lines
  • Extracting the refrigerant and checking the system for leaks
  • Recharging to the manufacturer’s specification
  • Checking the cabin filter and the condensate drain
  • On request: disinfection

Checking and recharging

We extract the refrigerant and see how much was still in the system. Then the system is evacuated: the vacuum draws out moisture, and if the system cannot hold it, there is a leak. We then fill refrigerant and compressor oil according to the manufacturer’s specification.

If a lot is missing, we look for the leak instead of simply topping up. The refrigerant carries the oil that lubricates the compressor, and too little in the system damages the compressor in the long run.

Disinfection

Bacteria and fungi settle on the evaporator behind the dashboard. On request we treat the evaporator and the ventilation and replace the cabin filter if needed. You can prevent this yourself: switch the air conditioning off shortly before you arrive and let the fan keep running so that the evaporator dries.

Which refrigerant?

Older cars use R134a, most newer ones R1234yf and a few CO₂ (R744). Which refrigerant and how much of it is shown on a sticker in the engine bay. They cannot simply be swapped for one another.

Large people carriers and SUVs such as the Chrysler Grand Voyager or the Dodge Durango often have a second air-conditioning unit for the rear seats, with longer lines and a larger fill quantity.

Appointments

Ideally, combine the air-conditioning check with the spring and summer check. Appointments by e-mail to info@autohausfritz.com or on +49 34604 348-0, Monday to Friday.

What customers often ask

How often should the air conditioning be serviced?

There is no legal interval; what counts is the manufacturer’s specification. If the cooling weakens, do not wait until the next service.

Is it normal for water to drip under the car while the air conditioning is running?

Yes, that is condensation from the evaporator. Water in the footwell, on the other hand, is not normal; in that case the drain is often blocked.

Should the air conditioning run in winter too?

Yes. It dries the air, so misted-up windows clear faster. Regular use also distributes the oil and keeps the seals supple.
